Self-Esteem, Depression and Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract
Purpose: In recent years, the aim of the treatment for schizophrenics has been focused on maintaining their function and improving the quality of life, other than simply relieving symptoms. Therefore the goal of this study is descriptive research to provide baseline date to prepare for improving quality of life in the chronic Schizophrenia by Self-Esteem, Depression, and Quality of Life.

Method: Participants consisted of 115 with chronic Schizophrenia, variables included self-esteem, depression and quality of life and demographic variables. Data was analyzed by frequencies, ANOVA and Pearson¡¯s correlation.

Results: In difference on the level of self-esteem by general feature, and there was significant difference in education, physical illness, current work experience. The level of depression by general feature was significant difference in education, physical illness. The level of quality of life by only physical illness. In a relation among self-esteem, depression, quality of life showed a significant correlation. Self-esteem and depression showed high negative correlation, self-esteem and quality of life showed high positive correlation. Quality of life and depression showed high negative correlation.

Conclusion: Therefore improve the self-esteem, lowers depression, and depression management programs operate to improve the quality of life is needed in patients with chronic schizophrenia.
